Lindamood-Bell

This reading program has been around for a very long time and even I have used this program for teaching my struggling readers in my self-contained emotional behavioral classroom. This program focuses on the sensory-cognitive processing necessary for reading, spelling, math, and comprehension.

Wilson Reading System

One of my favorite reading programs for children this program offers several literacy instructional models to meet the needs of any student. The programs included early intervention for K-3rd students, intervention for older students, and intensive intervention overall. Each model differs in practice, intensity, and duration, but all have been designed to help students master the appropriate level of literacy.

Orton-Gillingham

I would consider this program one of the leading programs for struggling readers. Orton-Gillingham is like the king of reading programs because it has been around for many years. This program is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling. It’s also a one-on-one teacher-student instructional model. Its use in small-group instruction is not uncommon. A successful adaptation of the Approach has demonstrated its value for classroom instruction.
