Tips to Help keep your child’s room clean!
Every Day Make the bed – have your child do this before the daily task this will not only build good discipline but also help your child with having patience when doing things that require a bit of time to do.
Monday- Clear All Surfaces
Clear all surfaces (dressers, tables, nightstands, etc.) Have your special needs child if permitted assist you if they aren’t old enough to live and move things themselves to clean surfaces with cleaning supplies. Showing your child how to clean surfaces can teach them the importance of keeping surfaces clean so that they won’t get sick and catch germs.
Tuesday- Dusting Time!
Dust all surfaces – this should be easy since they are all cleared off. Same as keeping your surfaces clean. If your child is tall enough then let them clean and dust off all surfaces inside their room. If however they are underage show them how to dust in minor areas while you handle the huge areas of dust inside their room.
Wednesday- Clear the Floor
Clear the floor (just the visible parts for today) and have your child clean the floors inside their rooms. If it is hardwood flooring you may need to use a gentle cleaning solution to get up the spills. But if it’s carpet then you may want to use the best vacuum and other things to get the floor spotless.
Thursday- Sweep/Vacuum
Sweep or vacuum: Now it’s time for Thursday and you need your child to practice sweeping and vacuuming the floor. Practice this routine for about 15 minutes a day while you take care of rest.
Friday- Pick a Spot!
Pick a spot – you or your child can pick one spot for the day. Make a list of all the problem spots in the room and slowly check them off.
Saturday- Laundry Day
Change sheets and bring all laundry to the laundry room. This is a great way to help your child realize that to keep the bed bugs, dust, and harmful bacteria inside their bed washing their bed sheets is the way to go.
Sunday- Free Day/Make-up
Free Day – you can also use this as a makeup day. Each week, make a mental note of the items that end up scattered about. Use baskets, boxes, or shelves, or create your solution to keep these items together. You may need to try several different solutions before you find one that works. If something seems to be working… leave it alone!
Each day, encourage your child to perform the scheduled tasks. Give them a time limit and use a timer (15 minutes should be enough time). Don’t be too picky, just try to guide them. They will soon figure out that if they clear their dresser on Monday and throw everything on the floor, that on Wednesday they will have to pick that stuff up AGAIN when they clear the floor.
Remember… it only takes 15 minutes per day to keep your child’s bedroom neat and clean.
