Becoming A Special Education teacher is Rewarding!
Reasons to Become a Special Education Teacher was not my first choice when growing up as a young child.
I always knew that I wanted to work with children but didn’t know what career field I wanted to go into when working with children. However, I always knew as a child growing up that I wanted to be a teacher. I would practice on my other siblings and younger brothers and pretend that I was the teacher when babysitting them over the summer. Little did I know that many years later, and taking the introduction to disabilities my sophomore year of college I would become a special education teacher soon.
It was my junior year of college that I was crying walking into my bedroom and I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. I had to decide between trying for the fourth attempt to take the praxis exam to gain entry into my teacher education program or switching majors to child development and family studies to graduate on time. Now I know you’re probably saying well how did I end up a special education teacher when I switched majors in college but please keep reading to let me finish my story.
So after switching majors I realized the importance and the foundation of a child’s brain development from birth through age 5, and realized that my graduating with this degree was for a good reason. I was proud of my undergraduate degree in child development but knew that I still wanted to teach in a public school system, so then I remembered what one of my professors said in college and started researching MAT (Masters in the Art of Teaching) programs during my last semester of college and over the summer after graduation, and that’s when I finally got accepted into UNC-Charlotte my home city and state to start my graduate journey in special education.
